Cigars for the NoviceIf you are just getting into cigar smoking, for the first few times you should avoid smoking strong-flavored cigars because you are not yet used to them and they may just cause you some really unpleasant side effects. And nobody wants that.

Hopefully, this will help you get to know the five cigars that could suit you when you're just beginning your adventure into smoking stogies.

These cigars are not that strong, yet not so bland that you would not enjoy them. Novices are really better off settling for light or mildly strong when it comes to cigars.

Flor de Oliva Torpedo (FDOs)

This is a cigar from the Oliva family, who is well-known in the cigar industry. These cigars come in a cellophane overwrap, rather than a box, and are premium, long-filler* firsts. This produces a well-balanced mild to medium-mild flavor with a dash of sweetness. A stick** of it would cost you about a $1.50-$1.75. The filler is 100% fully-aged Nicaraguan tobacco.

Baccarat Luchadores

These cigars are the color of milk chocolate and have a sweetened tip.  It may be hard to find the tobacco flavor the first time you try one.   This particular cigar tastes best straight from the box, rather than from your humidor.

Punch Grand Cru Robusto

The cigar is mellow enough for the novice cigar smoker, yet well rounded enough for a veteran.  Many new smokers wish that it were longer for it really tastes good. With it's smooth, well rounded flavor, it is especially inviting when stored in the humidor for some months.  This is a very well-constructed cigar as well.

Arturo Fuente Curly Head

From the Fuente group of cigars, this cigar is very reasonably priced and a big favorite among beginning smokers because of its extra mild taste.  This rich hand-made with a mixed Dominican short filler blend. It's very easy drawing and a perfect beginner cigar.

Excalibur No. 5

By Hoyo de Monterrey is a dark chocolate wrapper and a nice earthy, spicy aroma. It produces a lot of smoke, good for impressing your friends. Ha. It's origin is Honduras with Honduran and Nicaraguan filler and a medium-full body.  There are different ranges but Excalibur No. 5 compared to No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 is mild and really tasty if kept in a humidor.

There are loads of cigars out there in all corners of the world but these are simply the best for beginners.  This is very good reading if you're a newbie to cigars.

* Long filler: tobacco that runs the length of the body of the cigar, rather than chopped pieces found in machine-made cigars
** Stick: Single cigar
